Two Great Commandments & Doctrine of Christ

5
(2)

According to Jesus, the two great commandments of “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength” and “love thy neighbour as thyself” are the greatest of all commandments. But does this excuse one from obedience to all of the Lord’s commandments? Jesus also taught, “if ye love me, keep my commandments” and “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Who Are Christ’s Church?

Christ’s church are those who repent and come unto Him. Nothing more, nothing less.

D&C 10:64-69
67 Behold, this is my doctrine— whosoever repenteth and cometh unto me, the same is my church.
68 Whosoever declareth more or less than this, the same is not of me, but is against me; therefore he is not of my church.

Those who are guilty of inserting any other man-made commandments into membership prerequisites are by definition not His Church, and their deeds “cometh of evil.”

Those Who Come Unto Him Become Children of God

Christ says “to as many as received me, gave I power to become my sons; even so will I give unto as many as will receive me, power to become my sons. And verily, verily, I say unto you, he that receiveth my gospel receiveth me, and he that receiveth not my gospel receiveth not me. And this is my gospel—repentance and baptism by water, and then cometh the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost, even the Comforter, which showeth all things, and teacheth the peaceable things of the kingdom.” (D&C 39:3-6)

as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the sons of God… And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost (3 Nephi 9:17,20)

Christ Answers the Ends of the Law for the Repentant

Lehi taught: “the law is given unto men. And by the law no flesh is justified; or, by the law men are cut off. Yea, by the temporal law they were cut off… Behold, he [Christ] offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered.” (2 Nephi 2:5-7)

Jesus taught his doctrine and how it applies to the two great commandments. In 3 Nephi 11, Christ teaches how to be saved (3 Nephi 11:32-40).

Faith, Hope & Charity

Alma 7:24“And see that ye have faith, hope, and charity, and then ye will always abound in good works.”

Either 12:28“Behold, I will show unto the Gentiles their weakness, and I will show unto them that faith, hope, and charity bringeth unto me-the fountain of all righteousness.”

The Two Great Commandments in the Law

Mark 12:28-40
28 And one of the ascribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.
38 And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the ascribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
40 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

Lovest Thou Me? Feed My Sheep

John 21:15-17
15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. 16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. 17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
