Christ’s doctrine is what He declares it is. His doctrine is so important to comprehend that Jesus warns people to keep it accurate. “Whoso shall declare more or less than this, and establish it for my doctrine, the same cometh of evil.” He declares that those who are on His rock profess no more or less than His doctrine. Living the doctrine of Christ is the only way to “come unto Him” and obtain the gift of salvation. What is the doctrine of Christ exactly?

Jesus Christ and his prophets answer the question: “What is the doctrine of Christ” in the scriptures.

Prophets Taught the Doctrine of Christ

Jacob 7:6 – Sherem’s challenge to Jacob: “I have sought much opportunity that I might speak unto you; for I have heard and also know that thou goest about much, preaching that which ye call the gospel, or the doctrine of Christ.”

What the Doctrine of Christ Is

3 Nephi 11:31-40 – Christ’s declaration: “I will declare unto you my doctrine. And this is my doctrine, and it is the doctrine which the Father hath given unto me” and he describes the doctrine in detail.

2 Nephi 31:2-21 – Nephi finishes his record by teaching the doctrine if Christ in plainness: “I must speak concerning the doctrine of Christ“. “Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life…. this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen.”

2 Nephi 32:1-9 – Nephi teaches the doctrine of Christ is the only doctrine until Christ manifests himself to you. “if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do.” He then states: “Behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and there will be no more doctrine given until after he shall manifest himself unto you in the flesh.”

The Doctrine of Christ = His Gospel

3 Nephi 27:13-22 – Jesus summarized what He calls “my gospel” to the Nephites. “this is the commandment: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day. Verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel“

D&C 33:11-13 – Christ associates His doctrine with His gospel. They are the same. “repent and be baptized, every one of you, for a remission of your sins; yea, be baptized even by water, and then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost. Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel… And upon this rock I will build my church; yea, upon this rock ye are built“

How to Repent & Come Unto Him

3 Nephi 9:13-22 -Jesus Christ emphasizes the terms for which one may “come unto Him.” – “And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost… Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God.”

3 Nephi 19:11-15 – An example of baptism of water, fire and the Holy Ghost among the Nephites.

The Doctrine of Christ Leads to His Glory

D&C 76:50-54 – The Lord describes those of celestial nature and of the Church of the Firstborn. “concerning them who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just. They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and believed on his name and were baptized after the manner of his burial, being buried in the water in his name, and this according to the commandment which he has given“

D&C 84:19-24 – Moses sought diligently to teach the doctrine of Christ so that his people might enter into the rest of the Lord. “Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest. And without the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh; For without this no man can see the face of God, even the Father, and live. Now this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God;”

Romans 5:1-5 – Paul teaches “being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God… And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost.”

Another Comforter, The Holy Spirit of Promise

D&C 88:1-5 – God gives “another comforter” to the faithful followers of the doctrine of Christ. “I now send upon you another Comforter, even upon you my friends, that it may abide in your hearts, even the Holy Spirit of promise; which other Comforter is the same that I promised unto my disciples.... This Comforter is the promise which I give unto you of eternal life, even the glory of the celestial kingdom; Which glory is that of the church of the Firstborn, even of God, the holiest of all, through Jesus Christ his Son”

D&C 84:43-48 – The Lord declares “give diligent heed to the words of eternal life. For you shall live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God.”

Omni 1:26 -Omni summarized the doctrine of Christ. “I would that ye should come unto Christ, who is the Holy One of Israel, and partake of his salvation, and the power of his redemption. Yea, come unto him, and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him, and continue in fasting and praying, and endure to the end;”
