According to Jesus, the two great commandments of “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength” and “love thy neighbour as thyself” are the greatest of all commandments. But does this excuse one from obedience to all of the Lord’s commandments? Jesus also taught, “if ye love me, keep my commandments” and “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Nephi’s famous “I will go and do” one-liner is not the hallmark example of blind obedience to a parent, a prophet, or a religion. Rather, it’s the fruits of one who has put in the time, effort and faith to understand God’s will for themselves, seeking to become a true servant. After the Lord endows a servant with His power, then no task, favor, commandment or mission is too large, too scary or too inconvenient.

Are those who seek to be “commanded in all things” slothful and unwise servants? Or are there deeper principles to the D&C 58 revelation that need further exploration? Alma teaches us to “counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good.” How does one reconcile these two statements and develop a healthy servant relationship with the Lord?
