How, When & Why The LDS Churches Were Condemned

4.8
(88)

As warned of in many scriptures, LDS restoration churches fell into condemnation and curse. How did this happen? When did it happen? What does this mean to us, living 190+ years later? And most importantly, under what conditions have the scriptures stated that this condemnation would be lifted, and when?

The scriptures speak about the redemption of Zion in the last days. To prepare us to understand that subject, we should probably first ask “why would Zion need redemption?” Can something be redeemed that never fell? Can God restore something that was never lost or tarnished? Are we able to establish Zion if we’re already living in it, or believe that “all is well in Zion” already?

Timeline of LDS Church Condemnation, Curse & Rejection

Overview and timeline of events regarding the founding, condemnation, curse and rejection of the LDS Church restoration branches.

Early Warnings of Condemnation & Cursing

The following are some of the early warnings of the impending condemnation, from revelations. The Lord is clear that these are conditional statements, wherein if the people treat lightly the Word of the Lord, condemnation would follow.

Book of Commandments 4:5-6
5 And thus, if the people of this generation harden not their hearts, I will work a reformation among them, and I will put down all lyings, and deceivings, and priestcrafts, and envyings, and strifes, and idolatries, and sorceries, and all manner of iniquities, and I will establish my church, like unto the church which was taught by my disciples in the days of old.
6 And now if this generation do harden their hearts against my word, behold I will deliver them up unto satan, for he reigneth and hath much power at this time, for he hath got great hold upon the hearts of the people of this generation: and not far from the iniquities of Sodom and Gomorrah, do they come at this time: and behold the sword of justice hangeth over their heads, and if they persist in the hardness of their hearts, the time cometh that it must fall upon them. Behold I tell you these things even as I also told the people of the distruction of Jerusalem, and my word shall be verified at this time as it hath hitherto been verified. (March, 1829)
D&C 24:5-6
5 And thou shalt continue in calling upon God in my name, and writing the things which shall be given thee by the Comforter, and expounding all scriptures unto the church.
6 And it shall be given thee in the very moment what thou shalt speak and write, and they shall hear it, or I will send unto them a cursing instead of a blessing. (August, 1831)

A Promise of Zion’s Law Given In Ohio

If the people succeeded in being faithful to the commandments given, the Lord would establish Zion among them. If they didn’t they would inherit a curse instead of a blessing. In January 1831 the revelation came stating:

D&C 38:31-32
31 And that ye might escape the power of the enemy, and be gathered unto me a righteous people, without spot and blameless—
32 Wherefore, for this cause I gave unto you the commandment that ye should go to the Ohio; and there I will give unto you my law; and there you shall be endowed with power from on high; (January, 1831)

Then on February 4, 1831 (just a few weeks later), the Lord declared:

D&C 41:1
Hearken and hear, O ye my people, saith the Lord and your God, ye whom I delight to bless with the greatest of all blessings, ye that hear me; and ye that hear me not will I curse, that have professed my name, with the heaviest of all cursings. (February 4, 1831)

And within the next few years:

D&C 63:61-64
61 Wherefore, let all men beware how they take my name in their lips—
62 For behold, verily I say, that many [early LDS church members] there be who are under this condemnation, who use the name of the Lord, and use it in vain, having not authority.
63 Wherefore, let the church repent of their sins, and I, the Lord, will own them; otherwise they shall be cut off.
64 Remember that that which cometh from above is sacred, and must be spoken with care, and by constraint of the Spirit; and in this there is no condemnation, and ye receive the Spirit through prayer; wherefore, without this there remaineth condemnation. (August, 1831)
D&C 84:54-57
54 And your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because you have treated lightly the things you have received
55 Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation.
56 And this condemnation resteth upon the children of Zion, even all.
57 And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon and the former commandments which I have given them, not only to say, but to do according to that which I have written(September 23, 1832)

“Oracles” Given to Church Through Joseph Smith

D&C 90:3-5
3 Verily I say unto you, the keys of this kingdom shall never be taken from you [Joseph Smith], while thou art in the world, neither in the world to come;
4 Nevertheless, through you shall the oracles be given to another, yea, even unto the church.
5 And all they who receive the oracles of God, let them beware how they hold them lest they are accounted as a light thing, and are brought under condemnation thereby, and stumble and fall when the storms descend, and the winds blow, and the rains descend, and beat upon their house.” (March 8, 1833)

In that last scripture (above), “oracles” are the written revelations, and nothing more. Many interpret that word to mean keys, authorities or spiritual gifts that passed along to the modern church leaders. However, this is false, according to Joseph Smith. Joseph clearly taught that oracles are the revelations from the Book of Commandments, Doctrine & Covenants, etc.

Joseph Smith
“Some start on the revelations to come… This is the place that is appointed for the oracles of god to be revealed(Joseph Smith, April 13, 1843; “Words of Joseph Smith”)

“…men, in previous generations, have with polluted hands and corrupt hearts, taken from the sacred oracles many precious items which were plain of comprehension(“Joseph Smith History 1834-1838”, pg. 84)

Joseph Smith was the only one through whom the Lord would give oracles to the church in “this generation”. Joseph never passed on those keys or abilities, although many would later “fain claim” the gifts from Joseph.

D&C 5:9-10
9 Behold, verily I say unto you, I have reserved those things which I have entrusted unto you, my servant Joseph, for a wise purpose in me, and it shall be made known unto future generations;
10 But this generation shall have my word through you; (March 1829)

Broken Covenants = Covenant Curse

In the early days of the Church of Christ (1830-1831), revelations hinted at an impending curse upon those who would not receive the instructions and the law that would come from the Lord.

(July 1830)
D&C 41:1
1 Hearken and hear, O ye my people, saith the Lord and your God, ye whom I delight to bless with the greatest of all blessings, ye that hear me; and ye that hear me not will I curse, that have professed my name, with the heaviest of all cursings. (February 4, 1831)

After the September 1832 condemnation and command to repent and return (D&C 84:57), others still provoked the Lord with willful disobedience to His laws and commandments regarding Zion. The Lord states sharply that these were “cursed… with a very sore and grievous curse” April 23, 1834:

D&C 104:2-5
2 With promise immutable and unchangeable, that inasmuch as those whom I commanded were faithful they should be blessed with a multiplicity of blessings;
3 But inasmuch as they were not faithful they were nigh unto cursing.
4 Therefore, inasmuch as some of my servants have not kept the commandment, but have broken the covenant through covetousness, and with feigned words, I have cursed them with a very sore and grievous curse.
5 For I, the Lord, have decreed in my heart, that inasmuch as any man belonging to the order shall be found a transgressor, or, in other words, shall break the covenant with which ye are bound, he shall be cursed in his life, and shall be trodden down by whom I will; (April 23, 1834)

This is the approximate time wherein Zion was decreed as compromised and standing in need of redemption. Not exclusively due to external factors (persecution), but largely from internal problems with hypocrisy, slothfulness and disobedience.

Christ’s Name Removed From the Church in 1834

On May 3, 1834 Christ’s name was removed from the “Church of Christ” during a conference of the Elders of the church. The LDS church name change was discussed, and “passed by unanimous voice.” Joseph Smith moderated the discussion and vote, and many people were present that also voted affirmative to the motion of changing the name of the church to “The Church of the Latter Day Saints.” Those in attendance included (but not limited to) Frederick G. Williams, Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon, and Newel K. Whitney.

May 3, 1834
“Kirtland, Ohio, May 3, 1834. MINUTES of a Conference of the Elders of the church of Christ, which church was organized in the township of Fayette, Seneca county, New-York, on the 6th of April, A. D. 1830. The Conference came to order, and JOSEPH SMITH JR. was chosen Moderator, and FREDERICK G. WILLIAMS and OLIVER COWDERY, were appointed clerks. After prayer the Conference proceeded to discuss the subject of names and appellations, when a motion was made by SIDNEY RIGDON, and seconded by NEWEL K. WHITNEY, that this church be known hereafter by the name of THE CHURCH OF THE LATTER DAY SAINTS. Appropriate remarks were delivered by some of the members, after which the motion was put by the Moderator [Joseph Smith, Jr.], and passed by unanimous voice. Resolved that this Conference recommend to the Conferences and Churches abroad, that in making out and transmitting Minutes of their proceedings, such minutes and proceedings be made out under the above title. Resolved that these Minutes be signed by the Moderator and Clerks, and published in The Evening and The Morning Star. [signed] JOSEPH SMITH JR. Moderator, FREDERICK G. WILLIAMS, OLIVER COWDERY. Clerks.” (Smith, Joseph, Jr.; Williams, Frederick G.; Cowdery, Oliver (1834), “Minutes of a Conference of the Elders of the Church of Christ, May 3, 1834”, The Evening and the Morning Star, 2 (20): 160)

This name change is significant, given the statements by Jesus himself to the Nephites regarding the importance of Christ’s name in the naming of his church:

3 Nephi 27:5-8
5 Have they not read the scriptures, which say ye must take upon you the name of Christ, which is my name? For by this name shall ye be called at the last day.
6 And whoso taketh upon him my name, and endureth to the end, the same shall be saved at the last day.
7 Therefore, whatsoever ye shall do, ye shall do it in my name; therefore ye shall call the church in my name; and ye shall call upon the Father in my name that he will bless the church for my sake.
8 And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be a church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel.

Modern gentiles were acting in parallel to the Israelites in Moses’s day, having provoked the Lord though disobedience and rejection of His law. The end results for the latter-day gentiles and Mosaic Israelites would also prove remarkably similar.

From “Church of Christ” to “Church of the Latter-Day Saints”

Remember, the Book of Mormon called the church the “Church of Christ” also, and they went on to complete the establishment of a Zion order.

References to the name of the church in the Book of Mormon

Below are a few examples of evidences of the church’s renaming from the “Church of Christ” to the “Church of the Latter Day Saints.” The overwhelming majority of official notes, minutes, publications, scriptures from this point (May 1834) forward contained the new name of the church, even though in some rare cases, members continued to call the group the “Church of Christ.”

The 1836 Plea For “This Church, to Put Upon It Thy Name”

Later on (1836) Joseph Smith identified the LDS church as the latter-day gentiles (D&C 109:60), linking the LDS church with dozens of prophecies regarding the great condemnation and apostasy of the latter days. Joseph also plead with the Lord to put his name back on the Church and on his people in 1836 Kirtland dedicatory prayer:

D&C 109:78-79
72 Remember all thy church, O Lord, with all their families, and all their immediate connections, with all their sick and afflicted ones, with all the poor and meek of the earth; that the kingdom, which thou hast set up without hands, may become a great mountain and fill the whole earth;
73 That thy church may come forth out of the wilderness of darkness, and shine forth fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners;
78 O hear, O hear, O hear us, O Lord! And answer these petitions, and accept the dedication of this house unto thee, the work of our hands, which we have built unto thy name;
79 And also this church, to put upon it thy name. And help us by the power of thy Spirit, that we may mingle our voices with those bright, shining seraphs around thy throne, with acclamations of praise, singing Hosanna to God and the Lamb! (March 27, 1836)

We have no known record of the Lord officially changing the name of the church back to the “Church of Christ.”

Brigham Young incorporated his church on February 6, 1851 (many years after the murder of Joseph and Hyrum) with the name “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” This only happened well after the saints arrived in Utah after being driven out of Nauvoo. There’s no claimed revelation, conference, vote or explanation for the name choice.

Calling of the Original Twelve Apostles

To understand the lingering condemnation of the restoration churches today (which includes the LDS church), one must be familiar with the basics of LDS church history, and how the Lord intended his apostles to function. We’ll back up in the timeline to discover the origins of the Quorum of the Twelve and their intended functions.

Keep in mind that these twelve men were being called to fulfill a calling and position within the “Church of the Latter-day Saints” which was a condemned church demoted to the preparatory gospel. They too, despite their callings and ordinations would have to lift the condemnation and rise up to a level of an apostle in the Church of Christ.

In the Book of Mormon, Jesus Himself completed the Nephite twelve disciples’ ordination and endowed them with power to go out and do His work. Similarly, the disciples in Jerusalem are on record of having this encounter and endowment from the resurrected Jesus Christ. Should we expect modern disciples or apostles to be any different if they are to officiate in the same capacity?

Revelation & Instructions for Choosing the Twelve

In June, 1829 the Lord revealed how to call apostles in this generation:

D&C 18:26-31,37-39
26 And now, behold, there are others who are called to declare my gospel, both unto Gentile and unto Jew;
27 Yea, even twelve; and the Twelve shall be my disciples, and they shall take upon them my name; and the Twelve are they who shall desire to take upon them my name with full purpose of heart.
28 And if they desire to take upon them my name with full purpose of heart, they are called to go into all the world to preach my gospel unto every creature.
29 And they are they who are ordained of me to baptize in my name, according to that which is written;
30 And you have that which is written before you; wherefore, you must perform it according to the words which are written.
31 And now I speak unto you, the Twelve—Behold, my grace is sufficient for you; you must walk uprightly before me and sin not.

37 And now, behold, I give unto you, Oliver Cowdery, and also unto David Whitmer, that you shall search out the Twelve, who shall have the desires of which I have spoken;
38 And by their desires and their works you shall know them.
39 And when you have found them you shall show these things unto them. (June 1829)

The Lord was clear that these twelve men would see these things. They must also have a desire (intention) to fulfill this assignment to preach the doctrine of Christ to all the world with “full purpose of heart.” About 5 years later, it was time to choose and ordain these apostles:

February 14, 1835
“President Joseph Smith, Jun., after making many remarks on the subject of choosing the Twelve, wanted an expression from the brethren, if they would be satisfied to have the Spirit of the Lord dictate in the choice of the Elders to be Apostles; whereupon all the Elders present expressed their anxious desire to have it so. …President Joseph Smith, Jun., said that the first business of the meeting was, for the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon, to pray each one, and then proceed to choose twelve men from the Church, as Apostles, to go to all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people… The Three Witnesses, viz., Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris, united in prayer. These Three Witnesses were then blessed by the laying on of the hands of the Presidency. The Witnesses then, according to a former commandment, proceeded to make choice of the Twelve. Their names are as follows:
1 – Lyman E. Johnson
2 – Brigham Young
3 – Heber C. Kimball
4 – Orson Hyde
5 – David W. Patten
6 – Luke S. Johnson
7 – William E. McLellin
8 – John F. Boynton
9 – Orson Pratt
10 – William Smith
11 – Thomas P. Marsh
12 – Parley P. Pratt
(History of the Church vol.2: ch.13, pg 185-186)

Ordaining the 1835 Twelve & Their Charge

All of the Twelve accepted, and all in attendance received ordinations, blessings and charges. They listened to the revelation from the Lord (cited above, D&C 18). They received clear expectations that each apostle called and ordained would rise up to their calling, and finish their ordination by communing directly with God. This would allow them to bear “special witness” (different than a “regular witness”) to the world that they’ve seen God’s face.

Here’s one example of a blessing to William Smith, Joseph’s brother:

February 14, 1835
“We pray that he [William Smith] may be purified in heart; that he may have communion with God; that he may be equal with his brethren in holding the keys of this ministry” (History of the Church vol.2: ch.13, pg 185-186)

Apostolic Charge Given to The 1835 Twelve Apostles

After the witnesses called and ordained all the twelve men, a week later they received the apostolic charge (or charge to the apostles) by Oliver Cowdery. Joseph Smith was present and instructed Oliver to deliver the charge.

February 21, 1835
“it becomes my duty to deliver to you a charge; and first, a few remarks respecting your ministry… He then read the revelation, and said: Have you desired this ministry with all our hearts? If you have desired it you are called of God, not of man, to go into the world… Brethren, you have had your duty presented in this revelation… you have received it from those who have the power and authority from an angel; you are to preach the Gospel to every nation. Should you in the least degree come short of your duty, great will be your condemnation; for the greater the calling the greater the transgression. I therefore warn you to cultivate great humility; for I know the pride of the human heart. Beware, lest the flatterers of the world lift you up; beware, lest your affections be captivated by worldly objects. Let your ministry be first. Remember, the souls of men are committed to your charge; and if you mind your calling, you shall always prosper. …it is necessary that you receive a testimony from heaven for yourselves; so that you can bear testimony to the truth of the Book of Mormon, and that you have seen the face of GodNever cease striving until you have seen God face to face. Strengthen your faith; cast off you doubts, your sins, and all your unbelief; and nothing can prevent you from coming to God. Your ordination is not full and complete till God has laid His hand upon you. We require as much to qualify us as did those who have gone before us; God is the same. If the Savior in former days laid His hands upon His disciples, why not in latter days?

“…beware that you lose not your crowns. It will require your whole souls, it will require courage like Enoch’s… The greatness of your commission consists in this: you are to hold the keys of this ministry; your are to go to the nations afar off—nations that sit in darkness… If you will not warn them, others will, and you will lose your crowns. …you will be stewards over this ministry; you have a work to do that no other men can do; you must proclaim the Gospel in its simplicity and purity; and we commend you to God and the word of His grace. You have our best wishes, you have our most fervent prayers, that you may be able to bear this testimony, that you have seen the face of God. Therefore call upon Him in faith in mighty prayer till you prevail, for it is your duty and your privilege to bear such testimony for yourselves. We now exhort you to be faithful to fulfill your calling; there must be no lack here; you must fulfill in all things(Oliver Cowdery, History of the Church vol.2: ch.13, pg. 194-198)

Twelve Accept the Apostolic Charge with Full Purpose of Heart

At the close of the charge, Oliver Cowdery made sure each of them willingly and voluntarily accepted the charge of their own choice. The last few sentences on the record state:

February 21, 1835 (continued)
“He then took them separately by the hand, and said, Do you with full purpose of heart take part in this ministry, to proclaim the Gospel with all diligence, with these your brethren, according to the tenor and intent of the charge you have received?” Each of them answered in the affirmative.(ibid. pg.198)

This is the commission to every man on that list of twelve, as well as the commission intended for all who call themselves the Lord’s apostles, even today. The Twelve fully understood this at one point in time. Shouldn’t we expect this of every apostle (D&C 64:38-40), even today, given that the charge contained the words “we require as much to qualify us as did those who have gone before us; God is the same.”

God’s Warning to the 1837 Quorum of Twelve

Despite the unpleasant story for some, we must tell the story to illustrate the point that there are natural consequences for living with wayward intent and half purpose of heart.

On July 23, 1837 (2.5 years after their ordination and charge), the Lord gave a revelation detailing the status of the Twelve. He also gave instructions to Thomas B. Marsh (president of the Quorum of the Twelve) on how to deal with the Twelve, who were falling short in their callings:

D&C 112:11-15
11 I know thy heart, and have heard thy prayers concerning thy brethren…
12 And pray for thy brethren of the Twelve. Admonish them sharply for my name’s sake, and let them be admonished for all their sins, and be ye faithful before me unto my name.
13 And after their temptations, and much tribulation, behold, I, the Lord, will feel after them, and if they harden not their hearts, and stiffen not their necks against me, they shall be converted, and I will heal them.
14 Now, I say unto you, and what I say unto you, I say unto all the Twelve: Arise and gird up your loins, take up your cross, follow me, and feed my sheep.
15 Exalt not yourselves; rebel not against my servant Joseph; for verily I say unto you, I am with him, and my hand shall be over him; and the keys which I have given unto him, and also to youward, shall not be taken from him till I come. (July 23, 1837)

Admonish Them Sharply for Their Many Sins

In the years that followed, most of the Twelve became quite distracted from their calling. They rebelled against Joseph Smith, fell into temptations, hardened their hearts, had not fulfilled their missions yet, exalted themselves, and were guilty of what the Lord called “many sins” (D&C 112:12-15). They stood in need of being “admonished sharply for my name’s sake” so they would stop polluting the Lord’s good name by their ungodly conduct and involvements in secret combinations.

Similar to Peter and some disciples fishing a few weeks after Jesus died, these Twelve were basically told, “what are you still doing here? Go and feed my sheep! Get out there and do the work of an apostle!” The revelation also told them told them to cease from meddling in the affairs of the church, which were duties reserved for the Presidency, the Stake Presidents and the High Councils:

D&C 112:27
14 Now, I say unto you, and what I say unto you, I say unto all the Twelve: Arise and gird up your loins, take up your cross, follow me, and feed my sheep.

27 Therefore, see to it that ye trouble not yourselves concerning the affairs of my church in this place, saith the Lord. (July 23, 1837)

This compulsion of the Quorum of the Twelve to self-appoint themselves as a governing influence in the church seems to have started in the late 1830s. It was running rampant in the early 1840s when the Twelve returned to Nauvoo (they had been governing over 4,000 saints in England). The lack of repentance and heeding Joseph’s (and the Lord’s) counsel to cease and desist their “vain ambition” was further evidenced by Brigham Young eventually making the Twelve the sole governing body of the church after the murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith.

Rebel Not Against My Servant Joseph

Additional examples of their “many sins,” distractions and rebellions of the Twelve against Joseph Smith would include…

  • Entangling themselves in teaching false doctrines.
  • Belonging to and actively building up Nauvoo’s “secret chamber” (a secret combination that God warned about in D&C 38:13,28 that’s responsible for the future murder of Joseph Smith)
  • Neglecting their responsibilities to be full-time traveling ministers outside of the established stakes of the church. They finally attempted to fulfill their mission by going to England, but upon their return, few continued laboring in their callings.
  • Participated secretly in polygamy (Joseph Smith taught against polygamy until his death, as you can see detailed here)
  • Participated in secret priesthood orders that Joseph & Hyrum Smith were not aware of
  • Performed unauthorized “sealings” and “second annointings” against D&C 132’s clear limitations.
  • Embezzled ~$200/day from the Nauvoo temple fund (William Clayton, Temple History, Friday, May, 23, 1845 p. 157; compare D&C 101:47-49).
  • Brigham Young had a revelation created that excused him from his apostolic duties of serving missions (D&C 126). This revelation appeared in church history early 1850s, was dated July 9, 1841 and not canonized until 1876.
  • Eventually, young men shouldered the responsibility to preach the gospel abroad to the gentiles and Jews (instead of the Twelve). According to Joseph, it was an exclusive duty of the Twelve and Seventy. Elders were to serve “in the stakes of Zion” (not travel), holding callings “as high as” that of apostle (D&C 107:98). Apostles were only allowed to call upon Seventy for help with preaching (D&C 107:38), not Elders.

The Correct Role of the Quorum of the Twelve

Since the inception of their callings in 1835, apostles had only one calling. Their duty was (and still is) to preach the gospel and baptize among gentiles where no stake of Zion exists. This is why God warned them to stop meddling in the affairs of the church in Kirtland, Missouri and Nauvoo. Simply because that was the Stake President’s calling and keys, not theirs.

Joseph Smith
‘What importance is there attached to the calling of the Twelve Apostles, different from the other callings or officers of the Church?’ After the question was discussed by Councilors Patten, Young, Smith, and M’Lellin, President Joseph Smith, Jun., gave the following decision: ‘They are the Twelve Apostles, who are called to the office of the Traveling High Council, who are to preside over the churches of the Saints, among the Gentiles, where there is NO PRESIDENCY ESTABLISHED; and they are to travel and preach among the Gentiles, until the Lord shall command them to go to the Jews. They are to hold the keys of this ministry, to unlock the door of the Kingdom of heaven unto all nations, and to preach the Gospel to every creature. This is the power, authority, and virtue of their apostleship.’” (Oliver Cowdery, Clerk. Feb. 27, 1835. DHC 2:200)

The Twelve also are not to serve tables, but to bear the keys of the Kingdom to all nations, and unlock the door of the Gospel to them, and call upon the Seventies to follow after them, and assist them. The Twelve are at liberty to go wheresoever they will, and if any one will say, I wish to go to such a place, let all the rest say amen.” (Joseph Smith, Jr., TPJS, p.109)

For more support to the idea that apostles only hold keys to preach the gospel outside of the established stakes of the church, see this outline of priesthood offices and their duties (PDF, 7 pages).

Lord Warns of “Fullness of The Priesthood” Removal

Although some of the leaders remained faithful, the general condition of the saints deteriorated, much like in Moses’s day. The early LDS church fell under condemnation and they collectively lost the rights and opportunities of the fullness of the priesthood. When the Lord warned the saints in September 1832 of their condemnation, he also warned that like the Israelites, he would remove the higher priesthood and allow them to wallow in a preparatory gospel:

D&C 84:23-26
23 Now this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God;
24 But they hardened their hearts and could not endure his presence; therefore, the Lord in his wrath, for his anger was kindled against them, swore that they should not enter into his rest while in the wilderness, which rest is the fulness of his glory.
25 Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst, and the Holy Priesthood also;
26 And the lesser priesthood continued, which priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel;

Fullness of the Priesthood Removed From LDS Church

As we see below, the fullness of the priesthood had indeed been taken from the saints as of January 1841. This was not just a warning. It happened. However, the Lord stated clearly that those who would go on to wrongly accuse Joseph Smith of sins (including polygamy) would be “severed from the ordinances of mine house” (the endowment of power, or baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost) and left without claim to the rights of the fullness of the priesthood.

D&C 121:16-19,21
16 Cursed are all those that shall lift up the heel against mine anointed, saith the Lord, and cry they have sinned when they have not sinned before me, saith the Lord, but have done that which was meet in mine eyes, and which I commanded them.
17 But those who cry transgression do it because they are the servants of sin, and are the children of disobedience themselves.
18 And those who swear falsely against my servants, that they might bring them into bondage and death—
19 Wo unto them; because they have offended my little ones they shall be severed from the ordinances of mine house.

21 They shall not have right to the priesthood, nor their posterity after them from generation to generation. (March 20, 1839)
D&C 124:28,34
28 For there is not a place found on earth that he may come to and restore again that which was lost unto you, or which he hath taken away, even the fulness of the priesthood.

34 For therein are the keys of the holy priesthood ordained… (January, 1841)
Joseph Smith, August 27, 1843
“The Melchizedek Priesthood holds the right from the eternal God, and not by descent from father and mother; and that priesthood is as eternal as God Himself, having neither beginning of days nor end of life. The 2nd Priesthood is Patriarchal authority. Go to and finish the temple, and God will fill it with power, and you will then receive more knowledge concerning this priesthood. The 3rd is what is called the Levitical Priesthood, consisting of priests to administer in outward ordinance, made without an oath; but the Priesthood of Melchizedek is by an oath and covenant.” (Joseph Smith, Aug 27, 1843, History of the Church 5:554-555)

“There are 3 grand principles or orders of Priesthood portrayed in this chapter. 1st Levitical which was never able to administer a Blessing but only to bind heavy burdens which neither they nor their father able to bear. 2 Abrahams Patriarchal power which is the greatest yet experienced in this church.” (Joseph Smith, August 27, 1843, recorded by Franklin D. Richards, “Words of the Prophet Joseph Smith,” p. 245; spelling is original; This version contains details not included in the official church version.)

After the saints settled Nauvoo, a revelation in 1841 stated that if the saints did not repent and return, and follow the Lord’s instructions, God would cut them off. They received a warning about this several times prior to this (see D&C 63:61-63 and D&C 90:3-5). The Lord decreed that “ye shall be rejected as a church, with your dead, saith the Lord your God” (D&C 124:32) should they not faithfully execute his commands.

The task was to sanctify themselves and build a temple to the Most High. The stated reason was to give back to the church the fullness of the priesthood again after they lost it (D&C 124:28, 3 Nephi 16:10).

“Rejected As A Church, With Your Dead”

As quoted above, Joseph Smith is said to have taught on at least 4 occasions that the church did not have the fullness of the priesthood (the “High Priesthood”) from 1841-1843. With the charge to finish the “house unto Him”, the church was given a promise that they would “learn more about this priesthood” which Joseph said was not “yet experienced in this church” and that the house could be a place “that he may come to and restore again that which was lost unto you, or which he hath taken away, even the fulness of the priesthood” (D&C 124:28).

D&C 124:28,31-32
31 But I command you, all ye my saints, to build a house unto me; and I grant unto you a sufficient time to build a house unto me; and during this time your baptisms shall be acceptable unto me.
32 But behold, at the end of this appointment your baptisms for your dead shall not be acceptable unto me; and if you do not these things at the end of the appointment ye shall be rejected as a church, with your dead, saith the Lord your God.” (January 19, 1841)

This task and deadline (as well as the consequences) was common knowledge, even among the Twelve.

Orson Pratt
“There are some things however I wish to mention: we have learned from what we have heard this day that great blessings will be given to the faithful when the Temple is finished. I will speak of some of the consequences that will follow if we do not obey. When the Temple is reared, God will manifest himself in a peculiar manner; if we are obedient, he has told us he will make manifest to us things we are now ignorant of; he has said he will reveal things which pertain to this dispensation that have been hidden and kept secret from the foundation of the world. No former age or generation of the world have had the same things revealed; all other dispensations will be swallowed up in this. He declares in his revelations the consequences of not building the house unto his name within such a time. The Lord says, if you build the house in that time you shall be blessed; but if not you shall be rejected as a church with your dead, saith the Lord. So if that house is not built, then in vain are all our cares; our faith and works, our meetings and hopes are vain also— our performances and acts will be void.” (September 9, 1843, JS History, 1838–1856, Vol. E-1, Created 20 AUG. 1855–5 April. 1856, p.1726)

Baptisms were temporarily accepted in the river until the baptismal font could be completed. There came a time when Joseph Smith publicly declared at a church conference that there will be no more baptisms and no more conferences of the church until the completion of house:

Joseph Smith (October 5, 1841)
“There shall be no more baptisms for the dead, until the ordinance can be attended to in the font of the Lord’s House; and the church shall not hold another general conference, until they can meet in said house. For thus saith the Lord!(October 1-5, 1841, Minutes and Discourse, Nauvoo, IL, 1–5 Oct. 1841; in Times and Seasons, 15 Oct. 1841, 2:576–580)

Nauvoo Temple Never Finished

The million dollar question is: Did the saints successfully complete the house and/or the Nauvoo temple in the time frame God gave them? According to majority consensus on Wikipedia, “construction was only half complete at the death of Joseph Smith.”

Lyman Wight, was a speaker at the fall 1841 conference when Joseph Smith declared “the church shall not hold another general conference, until they can meet in said house. For thus saith the Lord!” He went on to say:

Lyman Wight
“The church mostly went from there [Kirtland, Ohio] to Missouri, where they commenced another house from which they were driven to the State of Illinois, where we were commanded to build a house or temple to the Most High God. We were to have a sufficient time to build that house, during which time our baptisms for our dead should be acceptable in the river. If we did not build within this time we were to be rejected as a church, we and our dead together. Both the temple and baptizing went very leisurely, till the temple was somewhere in building the second story, when Bro. Joseph from the stand announced the alarming declaration that baptism for our dead was no longer acceptable in the river. As much to say the time for building the temple had passed by, and both we and our dead were rejected together. Bro. Joseph then called all the councils together, and chose what he called a grand council of fifty persons, himself and counselors among the rest, as also the Twelve. More than once did he exclaim after this organization that if he should be taken out of the way the church would remain organized. We remained in a gloomy fearful situation for a short time when the death of Bro. Joseph took place by the hands of the mob… showing to us much plainer than language could tell that the church was rejected if the head was taken from it. The church now stands rejected together with their dead. The church being rejected now stands alienated from her God in every sense of the word.” (Lyman Wight, July 1855 letter Cooper and Chidester, editors of the Northern Islander. HRLDS 2:790)

The official LDS narrative today is that after the Brighamite faction left Nauvoo in February 1846, “a small crew remained to finish the temple’s first floor, so that it could be formally dedicated. Once the first floor was finished with pulpits and benches, the building was finally dedicated in private services on April 30, 1846, and in public services on 1 May.”

Even BYU’s special collections library summary states that the temple was never completed:

Nauvoo Temple (Nauvoo, Ill. : 1841-1850)
“The Nauvoo Temple (1841-1850), in Nauvoo, Illinois was the second temple built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Never fully finished, it was set on fire by arsonists in 1848, and the building was destroyed by 1850.” (BYU Library – Special Collections: Nauvoo Temple)

The Nauvoo temple had at least 6 different “dedications” on various rooms and floors, but it was still incomplete even by the saints’ exodus in 1846, estimated at approximately 80% complete. The westbound saints had already been smitten, driven and scattered. It was too late.

Some argue that the temple was completed in Nauvoo. However, the purpose of the completion was more important than the completion itself. What good would it do to finish and dedicate “a place found on earth that he may come to and restore again that which was lost unto you, or which he hath taken away, even the fulness of the priesthood” when the saints would never be around to see it completed or to receive the promised blessings from its completion? According to the revelation, they were to receive the fullness of the priesthood “in that place.” They never did.

Nauvoo Temple Destroyed

Brigham Young tried desperately to sell the Nauvoo temple to the Catholics with no success. They rejected his offers several times, primarily due to the illegal attempt to sell property that Brigham Young had no legal ownership rights for. He was not on the title, making Brigham Young’s efforts to sell the temple fraudulent and criminal (attempted grand theft) in nature.

After a stalemate in Brigham Young’s attempts to illegally sell the temple, arsonists mysteriously burned the incomplete Nauvoo temple on October 9, 1848. James Strang “accused [Brigham] Young’s agents of setting fire to the temple. However, Strang’s charges were never proven.”

In 1850, a wind storm toppled the remains of the temple.

The incomplete Nauvoo temple was abandoned, burned, then destroyed by wind

With Brigham Young and the majority of the Twelve conspiring to falsely accuse Joseph Smith as the cause of polygamy and other secret works of darkness (D&C 38:13,28), they unknowingly fulfilled the promised future curses dictated in Joseph’s March 20, 1839 revelation (D&C 121). Namely, that his false accusers would be cut off from the true ordinances of the Lord’s house (his church, not the temple) and would lose the rights to the fullness of the priesthood for themselves and their future generations.

D&C 121:16-21
16 Cursed are all those that shall lift up the heel against mine anointed, saith the Lord, and cry they have sinned when they have not sinned before me, saith the Lord, but have done that which was meet in mine eyes, and which I commanded them.
17 But those who cry transgression do it because they are the servants of sin, and are the children of disobedience themselves.
18 And those who swear falsely against my servants, that they might bring them into bondage and death
19 Wo unto them; because they have offended my little ones they shall be severed from the ordinances of mine house.
20 Their basket shall not be full, their houses and their barns shall perish, and they themselves shall be despised by those that flattered them.
21 They shall not have right to the priesthood, nor their posterity after them from generation to generation.

And just like that, the latter-day saints secured for themselves a similar fate as the ancient Israelites after they too rejected the fulness of the gospel. The Lord allowed their prophet to be taken from them, along with the higher priesthood (see D&C 84:18-26, JST Exodus 34:1–2).

By Their Fruits, Shouldn’t They Know Themselves?

In the subsequent decades, the First Presidency and the Twelve apostles were hesitant to show or discuss their spiritual gifts in their public discourses, completely unlike Joseph. Why?

Sometimes leaders thought of (and advertised as) “prophets, seers and revelators” outright denied having these spiritual gifts, even decades later in general conference. Why wouldn’t these men know for sure if they were or weren’t prophets? You’d think one would know with certainty had they seen God or received a prophetic gift. But the records show otherwise.

Some examples:

Brigham Young
August 15, 1844 (Times & Seasons, 5:618)
You are now without a prophet present with you in the flesh to guide you; but you are not without apostles”

April 7, 1852 (Journal of Discourses 6:320)
A person was mentioned to-day who did not believe that Brigham Young was a Prophet, Seer, and Revelator. I wish to ask every member of this whole community, if they ever heard him profess to be a Prophet, Seer, and Revelator, as Joseph Smith was? Who ordained me to be First President of this Church on earth? I answer, It is the choice of this people, and that is sufficient.” (see Article of Faith #5)

April 6, 1853 (Journal of Discourses 1:136)
“Now will it cause some of you to marvel that I was not ordained a High Priest before I was ordained an Apostle? Brother Kimball and myself were never ordained High Priests. How wonderful! … When a man is ordained to be an Apostle, his Priesthood is without beginning of days, or end of life, like the Priesthood of Melchizedek” (as we covered above, his apostolic charge stated that “your ordination is not full and complete till God has laid His hand upon you.” Scriptures support this in JST Genesis 14:28)

July 26, 1857, (Journal of Discourses 5:72-78)

October 7, 1864 (Journal of Discourses 10:339)
I have never particularly desired any man to testify publicly that I am a Prophet; nevertheless, if any man feels joy, in doing this, he shall be blest in it. I have never said that I am not a Prophet; but, if I am not, one thing is certain, I have been very profitable to this people. In the providence of God he has placed me to take charge of his flock, and they have been abundantly blessed under my administration. I did not desire to be their shepherd; but the great Shepherd of all the sheep placed me in this position.”

“Let us rise up as a people and turn unto the Lord our God with full purpose of heart, and, peradventure, our sins may be remitted and forgiven, and blotted out. This is what the Lord has placed men to lead you for. You cannot see God, you cannot behold Him and hold converse with Him, as one man does with another; But He has given us a man that we can talk to and thereby know His will, just as well as if God Himself were present.”

“This failure to realize all the blessings and powers of the Priesthood does not apply to the elders and lesser Priesthood only; but it applies to the higher quorums, and comes home to ourselves, who are Apostles of Jesus Christ. We are presented before the Church, and sustained as prophets, seers and revelators, and we have received oftentimes the gift of prophecy and revelation, and have received many great and glorious gifts. But have we received the fullness of the blessings to which we are entitled? No, we have not. Who, among the Apostles have become seers, and enjoy all the gifts and powers pertaining to that calling? Now I don’t think many of us have attained to these gifts, but it is not the fault of the Almighty, but the fault is in ourselves… And I have thought the reason why we have not enjoyed these gifts more fully is, because we have not sought for them as diligently as we ought. I speak for one, I have not sought as diligently as I might have done. More than forty years have passed away since these promises were made. I have been blessed with some revelations and prophecies, and with dreams of things that have come to pass; but as to seeing things as a seer, and beholding heavenly things in open vision, I have not attained to these things. And who is to blame for this? Not the Lord; not brother Joseph—they are not to blame…. we do not live up to our privileges as saints of God and elders of Israel; for though we receive many blessings that are promised to us, we do not receive them in their fullness, because we do not seek for them as diligently and faithfully as we should.”
Joseph F. Smith
1903 (Reed Smoot Congressional Hearings)
Tayler: “What official position do you now hold in the church?”
Joseph F. Smith: “I am now the president of the church.”
Tayler: “Is there any other description of your title than mere president?”
Joseph F. Smith: “No, sir; not that I know of.”
Tayler: “Are you prophet, seer, and revelator?”
Joseph F. Smith: “I am so sustained and upheld by my people.”
Tayler: Do you get that title by reason of being president or by reason of having been an apostle?
Joseph F. Smith: By reason of being president.
Tayler: “Are not all of the apostles also prophets, seers, and revelators?”
Joseph F. Smith: “They are sustained as such at our conferences.”

Chairman: “You have revelations, have you not?”
Joseph F. Smith: “I have never pretended to nor do I profess to have received revelations. I never said I had a revelation except so far as God has shown me that so-called Mormonism is God’s divine truth; that is all.”
Chairman: “You say that was shown to you by God?”
Joseph F. Smith: “By inspiration.”
Chairman: “How by inspiration; does it come in the shape of a vision?”
Joseph F. Smith: “‘The things of God knoweth no man but the spirit of God;’ and I cannot tell you any more than that I received that knowledge and that testimony by the spirit of God.”
Tayler: “You do not mean that you reached it by any process of reasoning or by any other method by which you reach other conclusions in your mind, do you?”
Joseph F. Smith: “Well, I have reached principles; that is, I have been confirmed in my acceptance and knowledge of principles that have been revealed to me, shown to me, on which I was ignorant before, by reason and fact.”
Worthington: “What was the last revelation that came to the church from the one authorized to give it as the law of the church?”
Joseph F. Smith: “Well, according to my best recollection, it must have been about 1882. The purport of the revelation was calling to the apostolate or apostleship two men, who are named in the revelation.”
Worthington: “Who was the president through whom that revelation came?”
Joseph F. Smith: “President John Taylor.”
Worthington: “You say that was the last one?”
Joseph F. Smith: “I do not now recall any since then except the manifesto.”
Worthington: “Except the manifesto?”
Joseph F. Smith: “Yes, except the manifesto.”
Worthington: “Then do I understand you to say the only revelation that has come to the church in the last twenty years is the one that says polygamy shall stop?”
Joseph F. Smith: “Since 1882?”
Worthington: “Yes, since 1882 – twenty-one years.”
Joseph F. Smith: “Yes, sir; I think it is.”
Dallin H. Oaks
January 23, 2016 (recorded multi-stake fireside in Bellevue, Washington)
“I don’t think we’ll get it [a testimony of Jesus] like Paul did on the road to, where an angel appeared to him, where Alma the Younger had a startling experience. The Lord used a few of those kinds of experiences, and they’re recorded in the scriptures to catch our attention and teach us the answer. But I’ve never had an experience like that and I don’t know anyone among the 1st Presidency or Quorum of the 12 who’ve had that kind of experience… for millions and millions of His children the testimony settles upon us gradually. Like so much dust on the windowsill or so much dew on the grass. One day you didn’t have it and another day you did, and you don’t know which day it happened. That’s the way I got my testimony.”

Aftermath- Questioning Prophetic Gifts

Why are so many of these apostles and church presidents seemingly uncertain about their callings and abilities? If you saw God, received His word and had prophetic gifts of seership wouldn’t you know? If you’d received a revelatory “oracle” (like Joseph did), wouldn’t you make the effort to publish it and canonize it as soon as possible? Otherwise, you’re not serving the flock who is told to “live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” as commanded.

According to all twelve 1835 apostles, Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery and many others, the duty of an apostle is to bear that special witness that they’ve seen God to all the world (including the unrighteous). From the 1835 “apostolic charge”:

1835 – Oliver Cowdery
“….it is necessary that you receive a testimony from heaven for yourselves; so that you can bear testimony to the truth of the Book of Mormon, and that you have seen the face of God… You have our best wishes, you have our most fervent prayers, that you may be able to bear this testimony, that you have seen the face of God… it is your duty and your privilege to bear such testimony for yourselves.…(HC 2:13, pg.194-198)

If one hasn’t lived up to their apostolic calling by doing this, they will likely be indirect or hint about it over the pulpit. This leaves the audience wondering whether this common sense apostleship duty is some sort of mystery of the kingdom, or an expected duty.

Modern church leaders today might feel pressure to excuse their lack of experience with deity, by stating that personal encounters with Christ (seeing God’s face) are “too sacred to discuss.” Well, if that’s the case then Adam, Noah, Enoch, Mahonri, Elijah, Isaiah, Nephi, Jacob, Joseph Smith and other prophets are outright blasphemers. Because they all unabashedly and openly taught extensively about their theophanies. True prophets always do and always will, because they have.

LDS church condemnation D&C 84
Salt Lake temple undergoes a 4-year major renovation to help it fulfill the prophecy that it would “stand through the millennium

The reality is that it’s an apostle and prophet’s duty to tell the world of this “special witness.” As I’ve shown you above, this is and always was the responsibility of apostles, and if your apostles are not sharing this experience, they are derelict in their duties. Revelations state that holding these apostles and prophets responsible and removing them from office if they are impostors is his will (see D&C 64:38-40, JST Mark 9:42-46).

Where’s the Apostolic Charge Today?

Since 1835, the expectations and duties of the Twelve have morphed and evolved into mainly administering the church’s affairs and acting as a board of directors for the non-profit organization. This is not meant to be an insult, it’s just how it’s legally defined and structured today in the “corporation sole” articles.

Granted, it’s been over 185 years since Joseph revealed and taught with power the true purpose and calling of an apostle. However, there are still some semblance of an “apostolic charge” in modern years, although you may not recognize it, in comparison to the 1835 charge.

1835 – Oliver Cowdery
“it becomes my duty to deliver to you a charge; and first, a few remarks respecting your ministry… Should you in the least degree come short of your duty, great will be your condemnation; for the greater the calling the greater the transgression….it is necessary that you receive a testimony from heaven for yourselves; so that you can bear testimony to the truth of the Book of Mormon, and that you have seen the face of GodNever cease striving until you have seen God face to faceYour ordination is not full and complete till God has laid His hand upon you. We require as much to qualify us as did those who have gone before us; God is the same. If the Savior in former days laid His hands upon His disciples, why not in latter days?… You have our best wishes, you have our most fervent prayers, that you may be able to bear this testimony, that you have seen the face of God… it is your duty and your privilege to bear such testimony for yourselves.…(History of the Church vol.2: ch.13, pg. 194-198)
1916 – Joseph F. Smith
These twelve disciples of Christ are supposed to be eye and ear witnesses of the divine mission of Jesus Christ. It is not permissible for them to say, I believe,… I have accepted it simply because I believe it.… The Lord informs us they must know, they must get the knowledge for themselves. It must be with them as if they had seen with their eyes and heard with their ears and they know the truth. That is their mission, to testify of Jesus Christ and him crucified and risen from the dead and clothed now with almighty power at the right hand of God, the Savior of the world… That is the doctrine and the truth that it is their duty to preach to the world and see that it is preached to the world.” (Joseph F. Smith, “Gospel Doctrine” 11th ed, p. 178)
1958 – David O. McKay
“Later the President gave me [Hugh B. Brown] what is know as the charge to the apostles. That charge included a commitment to give all that one has, both as to time and means to the building of the kingdom of God, to keep himself pure and unspotted from the sins of the world, to be obedient to the authorities of the Church, and to exercise the freedom to speak his mind but always be willing to subjugate his own thoughts and accept the majority opinion, not only to vote for it, but to act as though it were his own original opinion after it has been approved by the majority of the Council of the Twelve and the First Presidency.” (Hugh B. Brown “An abundant Life” p. 126-127, experience occurred April 1958, under President David O. McKay)

Ask yourself: has the focus of the calling of an apostle has changed over the years? Which of the three apostolic charges above do you think would produce the caliber of men to resemble the ancient apostles in Jerusalem and Bountiful?

An Era of Unprecedented Revelation?

As seen in the quotes above, there’s uncertainty about the presence of prophetic and revelatory gifts being exercised today among church leaders of some LDS restoration branches. Even among those who are called “prophets, seers and revelators” and sustained as such.

Perhaps this is why the LDS church hasn’t even tried to publish a canonized revelation for over 103 years. D&C 138 was the last effort (Joseph F. Smith, October 19, 1918). Prior to that, it had been close to 70 years since the last dated revelation was canonized.

In defense, one might say “well, it’s different now.” And you’d be correct. It’s very different now. However, President John Taylor wished the canonization of scripture to continue, as he

Wilford Woodruff, Apostle
January 26, 1880
“And while my servant John Taylor is your President, I wish to ask the rest of my servants of the Apostles the question, although you have one to preside over your Quorum, which is the order of God in all generations, do you not, all of you, hold the apostleship, which is the highest authority ever given to men on earth? You do. Therefore you hold in common the Keys of the Kingdom of God in all the world. You each of you have the power to unlock the veil of eternity and hold converse with God the Father, and His Son Jesus Christ and to have the ministrations of angels. It is your right, privilege and duty to inquire of the Lord as to His mind and will concerning yourselves and the inhabitants of Zion and their interests. And whenever any one of you receives the word of the Lord, let it be written and presented in your councils and whatever by united consent you deem wisdom to be presented unto the people, let it be presented by the President, my servant John Taylor, as the word of the Lord.”

The 70-year span of no revelation was somewhat challenged by Joseph F. Smith, who claimed the 1890 manifesto was a revelation in the Reed Smooth hearings.

Joseph F. Smith

Joseph F. Smith: “Since 1882?”
Worthington: “Yes, since 1882 – twenty-one years.”
Joseph F. Smith: “Yes, sir; I think it is.”

Can one honestly and objectively believe that today’s “prophets, seers and revelators” are carrying the same spiritual gifts as Joseph Smith, Isaiah? Malachi? Lehi? The Bountiful or Jerusalem apostles? Didn’t Jesus tell us to beware of false-prophets in the last days, with a specific warning to inspect the fruits?

When Russell M. Nelson declares that we live in an “era of unprecedented revelation” (September 1, 2018) what does he mean? According to the data, Joseph Smith set a very high “precedent” for how much revelation can be received in any given era – and that was from one man (let alone 15) and covered only 15 years. If President Nelson’s statement were true, wouldn’t this “unprecedented” stream of revelation from God be reflected in our books of revelation today?

If 15 “prophets, seers and revelators” are indeed receiving massive amounts of revelation like never seen before (that’s what “unprecedented” means), where are these revelations? Why are they not voted into the canon or printed verbatim into the official church publications?

Utah LDS Church Condemnation Confirmed By Its Leaders

Lest you think this “modern LDS church condemnation” thing is all just theory, allow me to remind you that many church leaders have commented on this, including First Presidency counselor Heber C. Kimball in 1866 (19 years after the saints entered Utah):

Heber C. Kimball
The words of the Lord to the Church, through Joseph the Prophet, in Sep., 1832, will apply very well to many now: [He then read D&C 84:54-57]” (April 4, 1866; Journal of Discourses 11:211; 1st Counselor, 1st Presidency of the church)

As late as 1987, the official President of the LDS church (sustained as “prophet, seer and revelator”) confirmed that the condemnation spoken of in D&C 84 still remained in effect.

Ezra Taft Benson
“Now, in our day, the Lord has revealed the need to reemphasize the Book of Mormon to get the Church and all the children of Zion out from under condemnation—the scourge and judgment. This message must be carried to the members of the Church throughout the world.(May 1986 Ensign magazine, p. 78; President of the church)

In the Book of Mormon we will find the fulness of those doctrines required for our salvation… Do eternal consequences rest upon our response to this book? Yes, either to our blessing or our condemnation. Every Latter-day Saint should make the study of this book a lifetime pursuit. Otherwise he is placing his soul in jeopardy….” (November 1986 Ensign magazine, p. 5-7; President of the church)

This condemnation has not been lifted, nor will it be until we repent(March 5, 1987 Temple Meeting for General Authorities; President of the church)

Even as late as 1993, apostle Dallin H. Oaks made public statements regarding the LDS church being under condemnation.

Dallin H. Oaks
“I believe that it was the neglect—the ‘treating lightly’—of this subject that brought the early Church under condemnation. I believe it is the neglect of this subject that has continued the condemnation in our own day.(June 6, 1993; member of Quorum of the Twelve)

President Russell M. Nelson remarked that he became well aware of the current condemnation of the LDS church in 1975 by his priesthood leader, the President of the Twelve (Ezra Taft Benson), and stated that he would “never forget that lesson.”

Russell M. Nelson
“I was summoned to the office of the President of our Quorum, President Ezra Taft Benson…. With emotion in his voice, he read to me from the 84th section of the Doctrine and Covenants: ‘Your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because you have treated lightly the things you have received– Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation.’ By that time, President Benson had completely captured my attention. He then concluded his admonition: ‘And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon.’ I shall never forget that lesson.(October 1999 General Conference talk; member of Quorum of the Twelve)

Has he forgotten it yet?

What’s This “New Covenant” Taken Lightly – Do We Even Know?

Perhaps this is why President Benson worked tirelessly to get the LDS church to awake to their awful situation and take the message of the Book of Mormon seriously. This “new covenant” is in the Book of Mormon (3 Nephi 9:17-20) and it’s all about coming unto Christ with a broken heart and contrite spirit.

However, difficulty lies today in understanding what D&C 84:57 is actually saying. Russell M. Nelson and others have taught that the new covenant is the Book of Mormon itself, as if owning a copy makes you part of the covenant blessings.

Russell M. Nelson
The Savior referred to the Book of Mormon as His ‘new covenant’ with the house of Israel. It is a tangible sign of Christ’s culminating covenant with mankind(October 1999 General Conference)

How can a book be a covenant? What covenant did you enter into when your parents handed you your first Book of Mormon? The “new covenant” was something Jesus taught when He came to His people. He didn’t hand the 2,500 people at Bountiful a Book of Mormon. How could He? It wasn’t even published until 1,800 years later, and had He done that, the Book wouldn’t have contained His own words, because He hadn’t declared them yet.

President Benson wanted us to read and study the Book of Mormon seriously so that we could discover and live the “new covenant” that is contained in it’s pages, namely in 3 Nephi 9:17-20 in its simplest terms.

Repenting of a False Everlasting Covenant

We cannot afford to remain focused on a falsely changed everlasting covenant (see April 1876 entry on this timeline) that now emphasizes marriage, polygamy, having kids and “being sealed” to carnal or faithless ancestors as a means of salvation. These are all teachings that Jesus never once taught to His people, let alone mentioned in the Book of Mormon through his prophets. Getting married? Having children? Are those really the fruits of godly living? Don’t “wicked” people also live those laws?

This was the exact excuse that the apostate, condemned “members of the church” used against Noah (Moses 8:19-24) for the reasons why they shouldn’t repent and receive the doctrine of Christ, which was all Noah was trying to teach (see verse 24). These people (who once had the fullness of the gospel among them, but rejected it) essentially said: “We’re all the children of God already. We’re getting married, having kids and having ward parties. Our parents are from renowned pioneer stock of Donald W. Noname of the Quorum of whatever, don’t you know? Leave us alone, you apostate!”

But none of those “good things” they were doing led to their salvation, neither temporally or spiritually. Dead works.

Ask ourselves right now: What do I believe the everlasting covenant is?

Hope- Returning to the True Everlasting Covenant

Here’s the good news (gospel means “good news” by the way): despite the collective condemnation upon the church or the world at large, you personally and individually can choose to awake, arise, come unto Christ and lift that condemnation from yourself. His hand of mercy is still available.

There is a crystal clear lesson here: We need to repent and remember the correct everlasting covenant from the Book of Mormon. Jesus Christ himself delivered this and explained it in 3 Nephi 9:17-20. Notice there’s nothing in this passage (or the entire Book of Mormon) about marriage, child rearing, sealings to dead ancestors, proxy work, etc. There’s a very good reason for that: Those are not the everlasting covenant, and never were. It’s only about offering up a broken heart and contrite spirit (what Jesus asked for), so that God can redeem you and make you a member of his family.

3 Nephi 9:17-20
17 And as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the sons of God; and even so will I to as many as shall believe on my name, for behold, by me redemption cometh, and in me is the law of Moses fulfilled.
18 I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
19 And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings.
20 And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost
Jesus taught the correct “new and everlasting covenant” to the Nephites

Joseph Smith insisted that the Book of Mormon was “the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book” (BoM Title page). Therefore, the new covenant (that of “a broken heart and contrite spirit”) contained in the book (it’s not the book itself) must be our focus.

Why? Because it’s precisely what Jesus asked us to do.

But What About My Sealing Ordinances?

The Book of Mormon only teaches that we are to be “sealed” up to Christ as His children, or to the devil. Nothing is taught regarding “eternal families” or being linked to other carnal and fallen people as a means for salvation. Jesus Christ or the Devil. Those are your two options in regards to “sealings.” There are “save two churches only.”

Sealed to Christ

Mosiah 5:15
15 Therefore, I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his.

Sealed to the Devil

Alma 34:34-35
34 …for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.
35 For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his;

Do you want to be sealed up to a human family pedigree fan chart of lost and fallen ancestors, or God’s family? Here are your options:

  1. Sealed to Christ – Repentance and returning to the true God and the true gospel is the way to be “sealed up to eternal life” as a son or daughter of Christ.
  2. Sealed to the Devil – Do nothing. Don’t repent. Don’t change. Believe the teachings of men that all is well in Zion and that you’re elect, chosen, a royal generation, etc.
  3. Sealed to Ancestors – not an option (according to the scriptures), so who cares?

The only explanation in the scriptures in regards to the “sealing power” given to Hyrum states:

D&C 124:124
124 …I give unto you Hyrum Smith to be a patriarch unto you, to hold the sealing blessings of my church, even the Holy Spirit of promise, whereby ye are sealed up unto the day of redemption, that ye may not fall notwithstanding the hour of temptation that may come upon you.

Being sealed up to eternal life or the day of redemption is the goal of any “sealing blessings” in the church. You can only obtain that through coming unto Jesus Christ by repenting. Jesus Christ is the Holy Spirit of promise.”

D&C 88:3-5
3 Wherefore, I now send upon you another Comforter, even upon you my friends, that it may abide in your hearts, even the Holy Spirit of promise; which other Comforter is the same that I promised unto my disciples, as is recorded in the testimony of John.
4 This Comforter is the promise which I give unto you of eternal life, even the glory of the celestial kingdom;
5 Which glory is that of the church of the Firstborn, even of God, the holiest of all, through Jesus Christ his Son

Lifting the LDS Church Condemnation

The condemnation of the LDS church and the restoration branches will continue until we repent and return to the true everlasting covenant, which is about the condition of the heart and our intentions being pure. We must repent of and abandon any false traditions we may have inadvertently believed or supported.

Like the Jews, before Christ’s first coming, many saddle themselves with “dead works” born of councils, committees, votes and policy debates- many of which are packaged and sold as “revelation” in church conferences. These are the the fruits of the adversary who inspires us to “teach for doctrines the commandments of men.”

Regardless, there are still many among us teaching the pure and simple doctrine of Christ as revealed to all the prophets since Adam. It’s still here for those honestly seeking it. The only question is: Do you want it badly enough to be willing to let go of any false beliefs you might still possess?

We invite all to come unto Christ and learn of Him. His burden is light.

Despite the admittedly hard-to-swallow “red pill” regarding the general condemnation of the latter-day gentiles, the Lord has still given the gentiles (LDS Church and restoration branches) a chance to repent and return to Him. God is preparing the faithful saints (“wise virgins” and the “wheat”) to receive Him when he comes again. These are they who are wise and discerning enough to avoid the great deceptions, receive the truth and take the Holy Spirit as their only guide (D&C 45:56-57).

The fulness of the gospel is being made ready among the people in preparation for His coming. The spirit of Elias and those servants who are “sent to prepare the way before Him” are among us. Please, listen to your heart and the voice of the Spirit, and seek God’s guidance bravely and resolutely.

“Good People” Receive the Fullness of the Gospel

It’s not enough to believe that you or your leaders are “good people.” God determines who is good and who is not, and He has given us the measuring stick. We were never told to “not judge” people. Instead, we’re commanded to “judge righteous judgement” (JST Matt 7:1-2). That applies to ourselves also. This has to do with

  1. not assuming people are good, when they’re not (by God’s definition)
  2. not assuming people are evil, when they are not.

The hard truth is that according to God’s revelations, nobody is “good” unless they are prepared in their hearts and minds to faithfully receive the fullness of the gospel and to boldly endure in faith (regardless of consequences) until the end. All must be willing to sacrifice all things, including our own pride, reputations with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and ward members, social status, employment, callings, etc. for the truth’s sake. Then “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32).

D&C 35:10-12
10 And the time speedily cometh that great things are to be shown forth unto the children of men;
11 But without faith shall not anything be shown forth except desolations upon Babylon, the same which has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
12 And there are none that doeth good except those who are ready to receive the fulness of my gospel, which I have sent forth unto this generation. (December 7, 1830)

There’s only one way to avoid the impending judgements of God:

D&C 39:16-18
16 Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, that the people in Ohio call upon me in much faith, thinking I will stay my hand in judgment upon the nations, but I cannot deny my word.
17 Wherefore lay to with your might and call faithful laborers into my vineyard, that it may be pruned for the last time.
18 And inasmuch as they do repent and receive the fulness of my gospel, and become sanctified, I will stay mine hand in judgment. (January 5, 1831)
