Nephi answered his brothers’ questions and explained the meaning of their father’s dream. And then something miraculous happens. Teaching them about the tree of life causes them to humble themselves before the Lord. For possibly the first time ever, Nephi believed there was a chance his brothers would enter into the new covenant to receive the 1st and 2nd Comforters for themselves.

Fasting can begin with willpower. We can isolate our hunger, anger, and fatigue all by will power, and put those thoughts and feelings out of our minds. But I’ve found those sacrifices made through will power alone quickly turn to purposeless misery without the sacrifice the Lord requires: a broken heart and a contrite spirit.

You may believe that repentance means paying for your past mistakes and working diligently to change your inner natural man one weakness at a time. There may be some truth to that, but what I’m suggesting with this post is that repentance simply means doing whatever the Lord asks you to do, regardless of how hard it is.

Revelation comes much easier to some than for others. If you already believe you are one of those people that can’t get revelation, then this might not be easy. A false sense of humility is your first obstacle to acquiring most gifts of the spirit. Getting revelation is an act of faith. You must learn how to both ask for and receive it. The process requires time, dedication, and much patience.

Lehi obtained a great vision of the Tree of Life and taught it to his entire family. Nephi believed, but wanted something more: Knowledge for himself. God is able and willing to teach us the way that we can “ourselves, also, through the infinite goodness of God, and the manifestations of his Spirit, have great views of that which is to come; and were it expedient, we could prophesy of all things.”
