The War of Liberty- Alma & Captain Moroni

5
(4)

Secret combinations enforced tyranny and appointed wicked and murderous leaders into positions of power. The Nephites only sought to preserve their lands, houses, family, rights, privileges, liberty, and ability to worship God. The Nephites followed God’s command to “defend your families even unto bloodshed” and fought a defensive war with success, and extended a peaceful covenant to those who sought to destroy them.

Alma & His Sons Preach the Word of God

  • Alma and his sons preached with the spirit of prophecy and revelation after the holy order of God (Alma 43:1-2)
  • The Holy Order of God explained and defined (Alma 13:1-3, JST Genesis 14:27-32, D&C 76:56-58,66-67).
  • Alma and the sons of Mosiah also preached according to the spirit (Alma 17:2).
  • After this, there came a strategy to enforce tyranny and appoint those who had a wicked and murderous disposition (Amalekites and Zoramites) into positions of power and influence.

Captain Moroni Engages in a War of Liberty

  • The Lamanites’ strategy was to bring the Nephites into bondage, to control the people and their resources (Alma 43:6-8).
  • The Nephites strategy was the opposite. They sought to support and protect their lands, houses, family, rights, privileges, liberty, and ability to worship God according to their desires. The Nephites fought not only for themselves, but also for their brethren (Alma 43:9-13).
  • Captain Moroni was appointed as Nephite chief captain. The word of the Lord came to Alma, who then told Moroni the war designs of the Lamanites through prophecy (Alma 43:16,24,26,29-30).
  • The Lord has said that: “Ye shall defend your families even unto bloodshed.” The Nephites cried unto the Lord for their liberty and freedom from bondage and engage in a defensive war of liberty (Alma 43:45-50).

Captain Moroni’s Covenant of Peace

  • Moroni defeated the armies of the Lamanites, then extends to them a covenant of peace that they might live.
  • However, if they were to reject the covenant of peace, they would die (Alma 44:1-21).
  • Alma is translated and taken up to heaven, like Moses (Alma 45:1-14,16-19,24, JST Gen 14:30-32)
