2,700 years ago, Isaiah saw our day and wrote in great detail about the gentiles’ troubles in the last days. He saw that many would be smitten and driven into bondage by the great oppressor. However, he witnessed the hand of the Lord raise up a Moses-like servant to deliver His people from bondage and lead them forth through a miraculous deliverance, and eventually establish the Holy City.

Every true prophet has worked tirelessly to teach their people to repent and return unto the Lord. Moses, Joseph, Noah, Abinadi, Alma, Nephi and countless others delivered the doctrine of Christ to the people so that they too might be made clean through the blood of Christ and ascend to the kingdom of God. In most cases, the people chose idolatry instead and suffered the consequences.

Joseph Smith was called to lay the foundation of Zion in the 1830s, but the saints encountered trouble and opposition both inside and outside the church. While the foundation was being laid, some of Joseph’s closest associates had a different idea and didn’t finish the work that was given them. In the last days, the Lord in His mercy will overthrow the wicked husbandmen (His “enemies”) and redeem Zion.

Everyone must seek knowledge and light for themselves. Nephi believed his father’s words, but was not satisfied with a witness from man alone. He wanted to know for himself directly from God. His detailed conversation with the Spirit of the Lord provides invaluable insights on how we can obtain the same knowledge for ourselves and sheds incredible levels of understanding to the vision of Lehi.

What does it mean to be “called and prepared from the foundation of the world according to the foreknowledge of God?” Prophecies of “one mighty and strong” who will be “like unto Moses” promise a deliverance of the elect from bondage, and the long-anticipated redemption of Zion with power.
