The Baptism of the Holy Ghost & Second Comforter Experience

4.6
(25)

Followers of Christ must follow the path He established. The path to the tree of life includes the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost and second comforter experiences. The host shares some personal experiences about preparing for, seeking after and receiving these things in this life. Those who seek to “come unto Christ” may know for themselves of “our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance” (1 Thes 1:5).

Baptism of Fire & The Holy Ghost

  • D&C 76:52 – The baptism of fire and baptism of the Holy Ghost is a priesthood ordinance. One who performs it must have an ordaination and sealing to the Apostolic Order of the Melchizedek Priesthood. He may be on this side of the veil or the other.
  • D&C 84:19-21 – The Apostolic order of the Melchizedek priesthood administereth the gospel by
    1. It is the authority to officiate in the church of Christ, the terrestrial order of the gospel.
    2. Is the authority to baptize by water into the Church of Christ.
    3. The power and authority to perform the ordinance as directed by the spirit.

It also holds the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God through:

  1. Performing the ordinance of baptism of fire and baptism of the Holy Ghost. If a person continues to ask and knock then they may receive instructions about how to enter into the rest of the Lord. The rest of the Lord is Christ’s presence in his glory.
  2. A man must be ordained and sealed to this priesthood to enter into Christ’s presence in his glory.

The “power of godliness manifest to men in the flesh” is the baptism of the Holy Ghost. One may receive it during an open dispensation, when a mortal on the earth has this order of the priesthood.

The Holy Ghost is “the Power of Godliness”

Millennial Star, August 1843
“In the renewal of the covenant with the children of men, there are many subjects of great interest to the Saints and of unspeakable value; but the gift of the Holy Ghost stands pre-eminently distinguished as the greatest gift that man could receive or Deity bestow. The possession of this gift, which is the power of godliness, is what constitutes the special difference between the church of the living God, and the multitude of systems that have originated through the will of man.” (“The Gift of the Holy Ghost,” Millennial Star, Aug 1843, No.4, Volumes 3-4 p.60)

Christ set the example, that we also must receive baptism by water and receive the full ordinance. The “gate” through which we must enter onto the path that leads to the tree who is Christ is

  1. faith in Jesus Christ
  2. repentance
  3. baptism by water
  4. baptism by fire, and baptism of the Holy Ghost (2 Nephi 31:7-9,17-19)

King Benjamin’s people coming unto a broken heart and contrite spirit and receiving the baptism of fire which accompanies the baptism of the Holy Ghost (Mosiah 4:2-3). King Benjamin’s people receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost. What it means to take Christ’s name upon us and become his sons and daughters (Mosiah 5:2-3,5,7-15).

God has offered mankind the option to repent and receive the baptism of fire and baptism of the Holy Ghost since the days of Adam (Moses 6:64-68).

Christ’s disciples repent, come unto Christ and seek to receive the baptism of fire and baptism of the Holy Ghost. As the 300 Lamanites received it, they were filled with fire, and angels came and ministered to them. Christ came and ministered to them also (3 Nephi 19:8-9,13-15,19-23,27-29).

Receiving a Second Comforter Experience

Many are on record in the scriptures as having a second comforter experience, entering into the rest of the Lord and witnessing Christ in His glory.

The purpose of the Church of Christ is to sanctify the people through the new covenant, offering up the sacrifice of a broken heart and contrite spirit that we might receive the baptism of fire and baptism of the Holy Ghost. That is what sanctifies and prepares at a future date a man, woman, and people to enter into the rest of the Lord which rest is the fullness of his glory (D&C 84:23-24).
