📖 Summary & Study guide

The Servant Returns in Jacob 5 Allegory of Olive Trees

In Jacob 5’s Allegory of the olive trees, a servant of the Lord goes multiple times into the vineyard to prepare the house of Israel to produce good fruit. The good fruit are they who are worthy of salvation. Jacob 5:70-77 describes the era in the earth’s history wherein the servant (Joseph Smith) comes back one last time for the final pruning of the vineyard:

  • 70 – Joseph Smith comes back, awakes and arises, and the heavens open again. The servant then gathers together the “residue of the servants” who were originally with him during his first ministry (D&C 101:55).
  • 71 – Servants commence gathering out of “the strength of the Lord’s house” during this time (D&C 101:55).
  • 72 – End-time exodus. The Lord’s presence described during exodus and appearing to the saints in New Jerusalem (D&C 103:18-20).
  • 73 – The process begins of the separation wheat and the tares (the wise from the foolish)
  • 74 – The servants are laboring in the vineyard right before Lord comes in His glory. Separation of wheat and tares takes place afterwards and he establishes Zion.
  • 75 – Once Zion arrives, this marks the beginning of the millennium
  • 76 – Millennial rest. Many will receive the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost during the millennium period. The Lord lays up good fruit (His children who received salvation) for a long period.
  • 77 – Then the battle of the Great God (Battle of Gog and Magog) happens near the end of the millennium.

One Mighty & Strong

In the Doctrine & Covenants, we hear of “one mighty and strong” (D&C 85:6-11) who the Lord sends, who has the power of God with him. This end-time servant will meet these descriptions:

  • God sends him
  • holds “the scepter of power in his hand”
  • is “clothed with light for a covering”
  • “whose mouth shall utter words, eternal words”
  • “his bowels shall be a fountain of truth”
  • will “set in order the house of God”

God Fulfills the Everlasting Covenant

Christ sets forth His doctrine (the doctrine of Christ), for the intention that we may become his sons by receiving him (3 Nephi 9:17-18). We receive Christ by offering up the sacrifice of a broken heart and contrite spirit and then we receive the ordinance of baptism of fire and the baptism of the Holy Ghost (D&C 76:52). This is eternal life.

Doctrine & Covenants 45:8-9
8 I came unto mine own, and mine own received me not; but unto as many as received me gave I power to do many miracles, and to become the sons of God; and even unto them that believed on my name gave I power to obtain eternal life.
9 And even so I have sent mine everlasting covenant into the world, to be a light to the world, and to be a standard for my people, and for the Gentiles to seek to it, and to be a messenger before my face to prepare the way before me.

Christ sent his everlasting covenant to the world through the Book of Mormon (D&C 84:57), which is the spiritual standard by which everything is measured. Those who have received what is available of the restored gospel who have eyes to see, ears to hear and hearts to understand, when they become aware of the everlasting covenant will receive it with gladness. The Lord’s end-time servants bring again the teaching of the new and everlasting covenant before Christ’s second coming. It will be taken to the ends of the earth to prepare the world for Christ’s second coming.

The Servant’s Focus: The Everlasting Covenant

When the servant (Joseph Smith) comes back, he will focus on teaching the everlasting covenant to those who will listen and who care. The new and everlasting covenant was taught by Jesus in 3 Nephi 9:

3 Nephi 9:17,20
17 And as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the sons of God; and even so will I to as many as shall believe on my name, for behold, by me redemption cometh, and in me is the law of Moses fulfilled.

20 And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not.

Christ thanked the Father for baptizing with fire and with the Holy Ghost those whom he had chosen. His 12 disciples (who He had previously plead their case before Father) were the chosen. Christ pleads for all of those who will likewise enter into covenant with him. He wants them to also become his sons and daughters. All those whom the Father gave Christ out of the world through the baptism of fire and baptism of the Holy Ghost are chosen (3 Nephi 19:19-23,28-29).

Millennium Conditions of the Earth

After Joseph Smith comes back and performs the end-time servant’s work, Christ comes in his glory (D&C 45:45-60, D&C 76:69). He reveals to the prophets details about the last resurrection and judgment after the millennium (D&C 29:22-29). The earth becomes celestialized (D&C 77:1,12, D&C 76:92-96,107-108).

Therefore, if we desire these blessings , we all must come unto Christ through the new and everlasting covenant.

Doctrine & Covenants 45:2
2 And again I say, hearken unto my voice, lest death shall overtake you; in an hour when ye think not the summer shall be past, and the harvest ended, and your souls not saved.
